Getting to know more when it comes to the Olympics

Tuesday, 22 October 2019 by blog
Olympics, Rochester Charter Bus

Significant events have the tendency to draw a many people, either in person or via television, and this is definitely the circumstances each time the Olympics come round. In recent years, we’ve marveled at the training, execution, and endurance of Michael Phelps, for instance, and watched, spellbound, as we saw Tina Maze take the alpine slopes like a boss. The entertainment, competition, dedication, and energy of the games is something that all of us eagerly anticipate.

Most of us know the basic origins of the Olympics, that they began in Greece almost three millennia ago. While we can thank the ancient Greeks for the outsets of an extraordinary tradition, the games these days are pretty different from those that occurred anciently. Just to make our point, check out these Olympic facts and see if a number of them amaze you.

The first Olympic Games were held in 776 BC. Today, we want to see athletes from all around the world in these renowned competitions, but it wasn’t always in this manner. Formerly, all competitors in the games were from Greece, and women didn’t take part.

The motto of the games is “Citius, Altius, Fortius,” which means, correspondingly, “Swifter, Higher, Stronger.”

In Ancient Greece, those competing in the games had to be everyday athletes (not the professionals of today), and all the participators competed naked. While this may sound funny to those of us living in the modern world, it’s not at all weird if one understands the concept of humanism that shaped Greece’s culture and the ideas they embraced.

While the games captivate people from all around the world, more countries enter into the summer games than their winter counterpart.

Let’s talk about dates: The medal ceremony practice that we’re all so acquainted with began in 1904, and the first Paralympic Games were held in 1960.

The famous Olympic graphic, featuring five interlocking, brightly colored rings is known across the world. Each ring symbolizes one of five continents: Oceania, America, Africa, Europe, and Asia.

The well-known Olympic Torch Relay, as it is observed today, began in 1936.

When the games were started up again in modern times, they were held in Athens, Greece, in 1896. Only 14 countries took part in the games and, as in ancient times, only men were permitted to take part.

It used to be that both the Summer and Winter Olympics happened in the same year, in contrast to today’s tradition of the games altering every two years. The only time they haven’t taken place has been during the two world wars of the last century.

While most of us watch the games from the convenience of our front rooms, there are some who are lucky enough to purchase tickets and watch the competitions live. In these and other events that pull a lot of people to a central location, a common headache that has to be dealt with is transportation.

And yeah, we know, you probably aren’t preparing the transportation concerns for upcoming Olympic Games any time soon. Transportation is what we do best, and our specialists will have the solutions and ideas by providing our Rochester Charter Bus. It is the one that you’re looking for to make the transportation side of the event a breeze!
