Niagara Falls: Honeymoon Capital of the World

Couples have been honeymooning at Niagara Falls for 200 years.

Amidst the tourists who flock to view the thundering cataracts of Niagara Falls are dewy-eyed newlyweds, holding hands and gazing lovingly at each other as they move obliviously past their fellow vacationers. On any summer day, wedding parties can be spotted posing for photographs in the flower-filled parks with Niagara Falls as a backdrop. This is the place of romance.

There are two different stories on how Niagara Falls came to be the Honeymoon Capital of the World. It is said the honeymoon craze began when Napoleon Bonaparte's brother, Jerome, visited with his bride in the early 19th century. Also credited for making Niagara Falls a honeymoon destination is Theodosia Burr and Joseph Alston. Theodosia, the daughter of Aaron Burr, third vice-president of the United States, had befriended famous Mohawk Chief, Joseph Brant while she was in New York City. Chief Joseph invited her to visit Niagara Falls. After marrying on February 2, 1801, Theodosia and her new husband took up his invitation and honeymooned at the falls.

Regardless of which couple honeymooned at Niagara Falls first, brides and grooms have been coming to the falls for over 200 years. Even today, when couples can easily journey to exotic places like Tahiti and Hawaii, Niagara Falls remains on the top ten list of best places to honeymoon. Niagara Falls has also become a destination wedding spot with chapels in both Canada and the USA, and attractions like the Maid of the Mist as ceremony venues. Honeymooners can get a Honeymoon Certificate signed by the mayor of Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. There is never a loss of exciting things to do from taking a helicopter ride over the falls to riding the 175 foot (53 meter) Sky Wheel observation Ferris Wheel. Romantic strolls along the brink of the falls, fine dining, shows, and casinos are some of the options couples can enjoy on their Niagara Falls honeymoon. And romantic rooms with a view of the falls are a commodity.
